MOONEY'S

PATENT ADJUSTABLE ATTACHMENT

FOR

SAFETY VALVES,

Applicable to all kinds of Pop Safety Valves now in use on
LOCOMOTIVES.

ITS MERITS ARE

ECONOMY OF FUEL, STEAM AND LABOR,

And the reduction of noise in the escape of steam.

We call the attention of Master Mechanics, Locomotive and Engine builders to our

ADJUSTABLE ATTACHMENT FOR POP SAFETY VALVES.

ECONOMY OF FUEL.

Master Mechanics know that by the present process of adjusting Pop Safety Valves, it is all done in the shop, and no one can tell how near the valve will work or how much it will relieve till the valve is put on and the boiler fired up.

Then after all this, nine times out of ten, the valve relieves too much. The fires must be drawn and the valve taken to the shop and altered and tried again in the same way, and perhaps this process has to berepeated several times, till the valve is got somewhere near right.

This is expense of the first order both as to Fuel and Labor.

By the use of our attachment, the adjusting is done in one firing, and the valve is ready to work, relieving the steam only as may be desired-from 4 lb. to 20 lbs. as adjusted-always sure, and warranted to work perfectly, as long as the boiler will.

ECONOMY OF STEAM.

Many thousand valves are in use to-day relieving boilers from 5 to 20 lbs. before they will close. This wastefulness of steam means fuel, and fuel means money. Our attachment overcomes all these faults. READINESS OF ATTACHING AND ADJUSTING. Our agent will take the worst-working locomotive valve upon any road, to the round house, and return the engine in a few hours in complete working order; at the same time instructing any one who has charge of the valves how to apply the adjustable attachment.

Please read the following letters:}

National Tube Works Co.:

BOSTON & ALBANY RAILROAD, BOSTON, July 27, 1876.

Gentlemen:-We are using your Patent Adjustable Attachment for Pop Safety Valves on every engine.. We used the first that was made and have continued to put them on as fast as the valves gave trouble.. This attachment makes the perfection of a safety valve. They can be adjusted with steam on the engine to blow down any number of pounds, or even ounces, that is desired; and It requires but little skill or time to do it. We have been using them for more than two years. Its simplicity and perfection of action will at once recommend it to every one having to do with steam boilers. A. B. UNDERHILL, Master Mechanic B. & A. R. R.

Yours Truly,

National Tube Works Co.:

EASTERN RAILROAD, BOSTON, July 27, 1876.

Gentlemen:-The Mooney Patent Attachment for Safety Valves, made by you, we have had in use two years. I am pleased to say they have operated to our entire satisfaction.

The difficulty experienced in adjusting the ordinary valve, frequently requiring the steam to be let off, and causing much delay, is entirely overcome by the use of this adjustable attachment. I shall make use of them as fast as it is practicable to do so. Yours Truly JNO .THOMPSON, Master of Machinery.

Dear Sirs:-In reply to your inquiry, I have to say that I have had a Richardson's Safety Valve, with Mooney's Adjustable Attachment, in use on a passenger engine for eighteen months past. It has worked to my entire satisfaction, having required during the time no repair or re-adjustment.

INJECTORS,

[COVERED BY FRIEDMANN'S AND OTHER PATENTS,]

LIFTING AND NON-LIFTING,

FOR

Locomotive and Stationary Boilers,

ARE MANUFACTURED BY

NATHAN & DREYFUS,

108 Liberty Street, New York.

These Injectors are economical and reliable. They deliver more water and will take the water hotter, with less steam, than any others.

They have no moveable parts to get out of order, but, on the contrary, have fixed nozzles, that require no care or adjustment whatever.

They start promptly and do their work surely. Since their introduction, many of the leading railroads are substituting them in place of pumps on new and old locomotives, having proved their superiority by repeated exhaustive trials. See report of M. M. Association, Railroad Gazette, May 19, 1876.

Attention is called to our improved attachments; also our new

INDEPENDENT FEED WATER REGULATOR AND HEATER,

all of which are in advance of anything of the kind yet before the public.

The Lifting Injector can be placed in the cab or any convenient place on the locomotive. Send for descriptive catalogue and price list.

We will send them on trial if desired.

CAUTION.

Messrs. Nathan & Dreyfus, of New York, have commenced suit in the United States Circuit Court for the Southern District of New York, against the New York Elevated Railroad Co. and Wm. L. Chase for infringement of Letters Patent No. 57057, dated August 7, 1866, relating to Injectors for Feeding Steam Boilers, of which Messrs. Nathan & Dreyfus are the proprietors. They claim, amongst other things, that Rue's Little Giant Lifting Injector, which is used by the Elevated Railroad Co. upon some of their locomotives, and for which Mr. Chase is understood to be the agent in New York, is an infringement of said Letters Patent. They ask for $1500 damages against the former and 85000 against the latter, and injunctions against both. They declare their intention to prosecute the suits with all possible vigor, and also to commence at once and prosecute other suits against all who infringe their rights by either making selling, or using any Injector like, or substantially like, their patented device above referred to.
