persuaded, though one arose from the dead."

CHAP. VIII.

The Unjust Judge. Luke xviii. 2. Those who pray earnestly to God will be protected and assisted by him.

And

AND he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not GoD, neither regarded man. there was a widow in that city, and she came unto him saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while; but afterwards he said within himself, "Though I fear not God, nor regard man; yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by

her continual coming she weary me'.

And the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge saith. And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily."

CHAP. IX.

The Pharisee and Publican. Luke xviii. 9

GOD will accept the prayers of the humble penitent, but not of the proud and presumptuous.

AND he spake this parable unto certain, which trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others. Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood,

and prayed thus with himself, "GOD, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are; extortioners, unjust, adulterers; or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I pos

sess."

And the publican standing afar off, would not lift up so much as eyes unto heaven; but smote upon his breast, saying, "God be merciful to me a sinner." I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself, shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.

Our Saviour's discourse to Nicodemus,
John iii.

On Faith in CHRIST.

God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is

condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather

than light, deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
