encouraging must it be to find the required acceptation of any word at first sight, than to pore over a large dictionary, and not unfrequently to find the word so explained as to convey but a vague idea of its peculiar import in the present connection. I have had repeated cause to pity some of my pupils, who appear to dread coming to the reading, and have often assured me that, with their best exertions, they have been unable to provide a satisfactory or even intelligible translation of many passages. Having thus given my reason for undertaking the work, and an outline of the plan I pursued in its execution, I submit it to the impartial judgment of the public. Should I have succeeded in proving myself not entirely useless to the inhabitants of this country, to whose hospitality every foreigner owes his warmest gratitude, my most sanguine expectations will have been accomplished, and will be amply rewarded.
