PRINTED BY COX AND BAYLIS, GREAT QUEEN STREET.

TO THE LADY ELIZABETH MURRAY MACGREGOR.

MADAM,

I have the honour, under the sanction of your Ladyship, to present, to the offspring of the noble House of ATHOLL, an elementary work, which I trust will be found not unacceptable in the course of their study of a language which is generally spoken in the greatest perfection and purity by the Noble and Accomplished of the Scottish Nation. The trifle, accompanied by earnest wishes for the health and happiness of your Ladyship's family, is respectfully offered by,

MADAM,

Your Ladyship's

Most obedient and humble servant,

ELIZABETH APPLETON.

PORTLAND PLACE, 1824.

THE following little work, written several years ago, was originally intended as an improvement on one long known to the public, but which was thought by most preceptors to contain phrases and words unsuited to the eye of youth. So many additions, however, in the course of the revisal, have been made, that it is presumed the book will now be found complete in its kind, and useful in all private families and establishments, where the study of a foreign language, and propriety and delicacy in the choice of examples, are deemed requisites.

PORTLAND PLACE,

PRIVATE EDUCATION, 2d Edition, 12mo. 7s. 6d. boards. "Many practical directions are given in this volume, which will be really useful to those who undertake the education of children. The list of daily studies, for girls of different ages, is judiciously drawn up; and several of the author's schemes for the improvement of her pupils do her great credit. We recommend her work to private governesses."-Monthly Review.

"The little work before us might not misaptly be called a critical essay on female education; in every part of which it enters, from the simplest to the highest studies, and from books to manners. The great variety of minute observation which is introduced by the fair author, bids us despair of drawing up an analysis of its contents. A perusal of this book is to be recommended to all parents, and to all persons concerned in the education of young females. It will naturally turn their thoughts to the detail of the subject, and supply them with many useful reflections.-Asiatic Journal.

EDGAR, A NATIONAL TALE, 3 vols. 12mo. 18s. boards. "Miss Appleton need be under no apprehension from classing her present composition among the Novels of the present day, productions which she so justly and forcibly deprecates in her work on Education. Edgar is rather an elegant Poem, for, although written in prose, the style is sublimely poetical; it is not the poetry of Ossian indeed, the poetry of imagination, but the poetry of the heart. The most noble, the most loyal, the most heroic sentiments, beam throughout. The finest, the purest lessons of morality are inculcated in every line. The hero, the states. man, the subject; the father, the child, the friend, may each and all feel their hearts expand, and become more elevated as they read."-Morning Paper. EARLY EDUCATION, or, the Management of Children considered, with a View to their future Character, 2d Edition, 12mo. 8s. boards.

"No mother will open this Volume without wishing to peruse it throughout; nor can she arrive at the conclusion without being benefited by the Author's remarks."-New Monthly Magazine.

This is an extremely useful and well written Treatise, containing much original and judicious advice, upon a subject, to which too much of the public attention can scarcely be directed.-Monthly Magazine."

THE SPRING BUD, OR RURAL SCENERY, in Verse, 12mo. 2s. "Among the various little works that are prepared for the entertainment of our young friends at Christmas, we are pleased with observing a poem by Miss Appleton, who has already evinced, her anxiety and ability to benefit the rising generation. See her "Private Education." The small volume before us is called the Spring Bud, and fancifully introduces the juvenile reader to the observation of plants and flowers, by an imaginary ramble among the sweets of Spring, to which they are invited with much vivacity: the playful style will not fail to awaken the alacrity of childhood in the pursuit of improvement."-Literary Journal.

THE POOR GIRL'S HELP, 2d Edition, 18mo. Price 2s. 6d. boards.

"We can safely recommend the works of this lady to the mothers and mistresses of families. They contain sensible and judicious observations upon the various duties of life, with simple but clear expositions of the meaning of the most important Doctrines of Scripture, and elucidations of the first principles and precepts of religion and morality."-Monthly Magazine.
