* This was to shew, that Isaac was to be heir to the blessings of his father Abraham, (in like manner as Isaac afterwards blessed his son Jacob, and Jacob his children, and Moses the twelve tribes, &c.) as Abraham had omitted it: the reason of which is, that as Ishmael and the other children were sent away from him, he did not suppose it necessary,

Before the sacred penman begins to record the generations of Isaac, he mentions those of Ishmael in a summery manner.

# Heb. Fell, || Aben Ezra-says, that the meaning of this expression is, that the resemblance which Isaac had to Abraham, was so great, that whosoever saw him, immediately acknowledged, that Abraham begat Isaac. But the learned Abarbanel is of opinion, that the word mobın does not only mean generations, i. e. the children he had, but also includes all those chances and accidents which happened to him; and which were so similar to those of Abraham, as to make it appear, that the resemblance between father and son was so strong, as almost to prove thąt Abraham begat Isaac,

He prayed, as the Hebrew word properly expresses it: and that, frequently, fervently, and continually.

** This speech seems somehow unintelligible. However, it may be supposed that she enquired of some experienced matrons how they stood affected when pregnant; and, finding her case different from theirs, she might say these words.

SS That is, they shall not both flourish at one and the same time; for when the one is in prosperity, the other will be in adversity. See chap. xxvii. verse 40.

# This word is derived from spy the heel; and as the Hebrews always gave their children names applicable to some particular circumstance, Jacob was thus named from having grasped his brother's heel at the time of his birth.
