60 the way, but found them not. Then the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had befallen them. And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the 65 inhabitants of the land do melt away before us. 31 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan. And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the midst of the camp; and they commanded the people, saying, When 70 ye see the ark of the LORD, and the priests bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it. And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves for to-morrow the LORD will do wonders among you. And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass 75 over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people. : 4 1 And the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying, Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man, and command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, 80 out of the place where the priests' feet stood 1 firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night. 1 39 And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God. And Joshua said, 85 Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you. Behold, the ark passeth over before you into Jordan. Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, for every tribe a man. And it shall come to pass, when the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the LORD of all the 90 earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off, even the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand in one heap. 14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, the priests that bare the ark of the 1 For stood read stand. covenant being before the people; and when they that bare 95 the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (for Jordan overfloweth all its banks all the time of harvest), that the waters which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap, a great way off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan: and 100 those that went down toward the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off and the people passed over right against Jericho. And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan. 105 4 4 Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man: and Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number 110 of the tribes of the children of Israel: that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? then ye shall say unto them, Because the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters 115 of Jordan were cut off and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever. And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, and they carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there, 120 and the people hasted and passed over. And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people. And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, 125 and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up unto the dry ground, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and went as aforetime. And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua set up in Gilgal. LESSON XXVII JERICHO The Israelites, led by Joshua, capture Jericho. But Achan, contrary to Joshua's vow, appropriates part of the spoil. He is discovered by means of the sacred lot, and put to death. JOSHUA V. 13-VII. 26 5 13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host 5 of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Put off thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. 62 And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour. And ye shall compass the city, all the men of war, going about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before 15 the ark and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. And it shall be, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall 20 down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him. And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD. And 25 they said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let the armed men pass on before the ark of the LORD. And it was so, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the LORD passed on, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the LORD followed them. And the armed men 30 went before the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rearward went after the ark, the priests blowing with the trumpets as they went. And Joshua commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; 35 then shall ye shout. So he caused the ark of the LORD to compass the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp. 12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. And the seven priests bearing the 40 seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; and the rearward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests blowing with the trumpets as they went. And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned 45 into the camp: so they did six days. And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times : only on that day they compassed the city seven times. And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with 50 the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city. And the city shall be devoted, even it and all that is therein, to the LORD: only Rahab shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent. And ye, in any wise keep 55 yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when ye have devoted it, ye take of the devoted thing; so should ye make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it. But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD. So the people shouted, |
