Q. What are the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

A. Love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, and the crucifying the flesh with affections and lusts.

Q. How will this appear in our life and conduct?

A. In a faithful endeavour to have always a conscience void of offence, towards God, and towards man.

Q. What does the word Catholic signify?
A. Universal.

Q. What do you mean by the Catholic Church, and whom may it be understood to comprehend?

A. All the professors of the true Religion in all times and ages of the world. But since the preaching of the Gospel, it is applied only to the professors of the Christian Religion.

Q. What do you believe first of the Catholic Church?

A. That this Church was to consist of people of all nations.

Q. What do you believe secondly concerning this Church?

A. That we cannot be saved unless we are of Christ's Church.

Q. What is the third thing you believe concerning it?

A. That the Christian Church shall continue even unto the end of the world.

Q. In what sense is the Church said to be holy? A. As to its rules and ordinances, which are all designed to make its members holy.

Q. What do you mean by the word Saints?
A. Holy persons.

Q. With whom do you believe the Saints have communion?

A. With God and with one another.

Q. How have good people communion with God?

A. By prayer, his holy word, and sacraments. Q. How have the Saints a fellowship with one another?

A. By being united together in the same faith and acts of religious worship, and in the mutual exercise of love and good works.

Q. What is sin?

A. The breaking of God's commandments. Q. What do you mean by the forgiveness of sins?

A. God's freeing us from the punishment of sin. Q. How do you hope to have your sins forgiven you ?

A. For the sake of Christ's sufferings.

Q. What must you do to have your sins forWen you?

Repent and believe the Gospel, and bring forth fruits of repentance.

Q. What are the external signs of the Holy holic Church?

A. First,--A regular Christian ministry.--Second,---The two Sacraments which Christ hath ordained

Q. What constitutes a member of the visible Church?

A. The Sacrament of Baptism and a profession of faith in the Gospel of Christ.

Q. Who are the lively members of the Church? A. All the elect people of God.

Q. What constitutes the character of the elect people?

A. Repentance towards God, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and a dutiful obedience to all the commands of the law.

Q. By what means may this character be obtained?

A. By prayer for the divine blessing on the means of grace; for Christ says, ask and ye shall receive; seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you.

Q. What are the privileges of the Christian

Church?

A. The communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

SECT. VI.

Q. WHEN shall Christ come again from heaven? A. At the end of the world.

Q. For what shall he come?

A. To judge the quick and the dead.

Q. What do you mean by the quick and the dead?

A. The dead, and those that shall be found alive.

Q. What do you mean by the resurrection of the body?

A. That the bodies of the dead shall be raised out of their graves.

Q. For what shall they be raised?

A. To be judged by Christ.

Q. What do you mean by Christ's judging them?

A. The exainining how they have behaved themselves in this world; that so the good may be rewarded, and the wicked punished according to their doings.

Q. Where then shall good men go after the resurrection.

A. Into life everlasting.

Q. Where is that?

A. Into heaven, never to die any more, but to be made happy with God for ever and ever.

Q. What will become of wicked men after the resurrection?

A. They will be cast into nefl-fire. De or mented with the Devil for ever and ever.

Q. Will not you and all mankind be summoned to stand at the bar of Christ ?

A. Yes: We must all appear before the judg ment-seat of Christ, that every one may receive things done in his body, whether they be good or bad.

Q. What will be the happiness allotted to the righteous after the resurrection?

A. They will be eternally happy in the immediate presence of God, in the company of saints and Loly men, and of the spirits of just men made perfect.

SECT. VII.

Of the Ten Commandments.

Q. WHAT is the third thing your godfathers

and godmothers promised for you at your bap

tism?

A. That I should keep God's holy will and commandments, and walk in the same all the days of my life.

Q. How many commandments are there?
A. Ten,

Q. Which is the first commandment?

A. Thou shalt have none other Gads but me. Q. What does this commandment require of us? A. That we should love, fear, and honour God above all things.

Q. When may we be said to have other Gods besides our Lord ?

A. When we sin against God, or neglect our duty towards Him for the sake of any worldly profit or pleasure.

Q. Which is the second commandment?

A. Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, &c.

Q. What does this commandment require of us? A. That we should make no picture or image to worship it.

Q. What else does this commandment require of us?

A. That we should not worship, or bow down to any picture or image whatsoever.

Q. What do you mean when you say, that God is jealous?

A. That God will not suffer the honour due to Himself to be given to any other person or thing. Q. How then is God to be worshipped?

A. In a manner suitable to his spiritual nature. Q. How is that?
