THE NEGATIVE.

In French the negative is divided into two parts, and the verb is placed between the two; as, je n'ai pas, I have not; je ne me repens pas, I do not repent.

But, in the compound tenses, it is the auxiliary verb that parts the negative ne from pas, as; Je n'ai pas eu, I have not had Je ne me suis pas repenti, I have not repented. There are other words expressing negation, such as; ne jamais, never; ne personne, no body; ne rien, nothing; ne que, only; ne nulle part, no where.

THERE are many words which are alike in both languages, the only difference resting on their pronunciation; and, observing this with care, would be of some assistance to the beginner, and would save him the trouble of referring to his dictionary.

With regard to the gender, the general rule is, that e final is the mark of the feminine gender.

All names of States, Empires, Kingdoms, and Provinces are of the gender which the terminations indicate; except, le Mexique, le Maine, le Péloponèse.

All the names of the days, months, and seasons of the year, are masculine.
