* Aller makes va in the imperative, and takes an s when followed by y or by en, as, vas y, vas en savoir des nouvelles; but it takes no s when y is followed by a verb ; as, va y remédier.

CONJUGATION OF THE VERB S'EN ALLER, (to go away.)

S'en aller is conjugated as aller, in its simple tenses, as,

The conjugation of the impersonal verbs of the second, third, and fourth conjugations, will be found in the grammar, at the head of the exercises on the impersonal verbs.

IRREGULAR VERBS OF THE SECOND, THIRD AND

FOURTH CONJUGATIONS.

In the following Tables of the Irregular Verbs, all the tenses are formed, except the Imperfect of the Indicative, the Conditional, the Imperative, and the Imperfect of the Subjunctive, which may be formed in the following manner :

THE IMPERFECT OF THE INDICATIVE

is formed from the present participle, by changing ant into ais; as, cour-ant, je cour-ais; mouv-ant, je mouv-ais; buvant, je buv-ais, &c.

THE CONDITIONAL PRESENT

is formed from the future, by adding an s:- je courrai, je courrai-s; je mouvrai, je mouvrai-s; je boirai, je boirai-s, &c.

THE IMPERATIVE

is formed from the present of the Indicative, by suppressing the pronoun je; as, je cours, cours; je meus, meus; je bois, bois, &c.

THE IMPERFECT OF THE SUBJUNCTIVE

is formed by adding se to the preterit definite: - je courus, que je courus-se; je mus, que je mus-se; je bus, que je bus-se, &c.

N. B. The compound tenses are formed by adding to the simple tenses of the auxiliaries avoir or être, the past participle of the verb to be conjugated.

FORMATION OF ALL THE PERSONS OF THE IRREGULAR VERBS OF THE FOUR CONJUGATIONS.

Second person singular.

First and second persons plural.

Third person singular.

Third

person plural.

INDICATIVE PRESENT.

The second person singular always ends in s, except when the first person singular ends in æ; in which case the second terminates like the first; as, je veux, tu veux, &c.

(The first and second persons plural are formed from the participle present, by changing -ant into -ons, for the first person, and -ez for the second; as, cueill-ant, nous cueill-ons, vous cueill-ez, &c.

(The third person singular is formed from the first, by merely changing the pronoun, when it ends in e; but when ending in ds, the s is dropped; as, je prends, il prend; and

when ending in x or s, these letters are changed into ; as, \je veux, il veut ; je sens, il sent, &c.

The third person plural is formed from the third person plural of the subjunctive present, by suppressing the pronoun

que; as, qu'ils conviennent, ils conviennent ; qu'ils meuvent, ils meuvent, &c.

IMPERFECT OF THE INDICATIVE.

The terminations of this tense are the same in all the conjugations:-ais, -ais, -ail; ions, -iez, -aient; as, je paraiss-ais, tu serv-ais, il pouv-ait, nous plair-ions, vous buv-iez, ils mett-aient.

PRETERIT DEFINITE.

The terminations of this tense vary, according to the termination of

the first person.

When the first person ends in ai, the others are as follows: -as, -a, ai. âmes, âtes, èrent; as, j'allai, tu allas, il alla; nous allâmes, vous allâtes, ils allèrent.

(When the first person ends in is, the other persons are thus: -is, is. -il; -îmes, -îtes, -irent; as, je partis, tu partis, il partit; nous (parlimes, vous partiles, ils partirent.

When the first person terminates in us, the others are rendered us. thus: -us, ut; ûmes, ûtes, urent; as, je crus, tu crus, il crut; nous crûmes, vous crûtes, ils crurent.

FUTURE.

The terminations of the Future are always the same for every conjugation, viz: -rai, -ras, -ra; -rons, -rez, -ront; as, j'irai,tu parviendras, il verra; nous réduirons, vous cueillerez, ils liront.

CONDITIONAL PRESENT.

The Conditional is terminated in all its persons invariably as follows, -rais, -rais, -rait; -rions, -riez, -raient; je comprendrais, tu sortirais, il sortirait; nous prendrions, vous entendriez, ils entendraient.

First and

second persons singular.

Third persons singular and plural.

IMPERATIVE.

The first and the second persons plural are like the same

persons of the Indicative present, without the pronouns : nous lisons, lisons; vous écrivez, écrivez, &c.

The third persons singular and plural are like the same persons of the present of the Subjunctive: qu'il lise, qu'ils écrivent, &c.

SUBJUNCTIVE PRESENT.

The first person of this tense is given in the table of Irregular Verbs, and the other persons terminate thus: -e, -es, -e; -ions, -iez, -ent; as, que j'appartienn-e, que tu couvr-es, qu'il bouill-e; que nous déplaisions, que vous viv-iez, qu'ils lis-ent.

IMPERFECT OF THE SUBJUNCTIVE.

The terminations of the Imperfect of the Subjunctive differ, according as the first person begins:

asse.

isse.

(When the first person terminates in asse, the other persons are

thus terminated: -asses, -ât; -assions, -assiez, -assent; as, que j'allasse, que tu allasses, qu'il allât; que nous allassions, que vous allassiez, qu'ils allassent.

When the first person terminates in isse, the others terminate thus: -isses, -il; -issions, -issiez, issent; as, que je partisse, que tu partisses, qu'il ouvrit ; que nous ouvrissions, que vous prissiez, qu'ils prissent.

(When the first person ends in usse, the other persons end thus: -usses, út; -ussions, -ussiez, -usaent; as, que je connusse, que tu usse. { connusses, qu'il connût; que nous parussions, que vous parussiez, qu'il parussent.

REMARK ON THE FOLLOWING TABLE OF THE

IRREGULAR VERBS.

As some verbs are conjugated sometimes with avoir and sometimes with être, the scholar will pay attention to the following signs :

denotes that the verb is to be conjugated with être.

+ denotes that the verb is sometimes conjugated with être, and sometimes with avoir.

(se) after the infinitive, denotes that the verb is pronominal.
