THE Adverb is a word invariable, which is joined to verbs, or adjectives, to express their manners or circumstances; thus, when we say: cet enfant parle destinctement, by this word distinctement, we wish to be understood that he speaks in a peculiar manner. Cet homme est bien riche. This word bien, modifies the adjective riche. There are different kinds of Adverbs, the greater number of which express manner; they are formed from adjectives, according to the following rules. RULE I. When the adjective ends in the masculine with a vowel, the adverb is formed by adding ment, as sage, wise; sagement, wisely; modeste, modest; modestement, modestly. RULE II. When the adjective is terminated with a consonant in the masculine, the adverb is formed from the feminine termination, by adding ment; as heureux, m., heureuse, f. happy ; heureusement, happily; franc, m., franche, f., franchement, frankly. EXCEPTIONS, To THE FIRST RULE. Impuni makes impunément, and traître, traîtreusement. The following six take an accent acute (') over the e mute, in the adjective, before ment; as, aveuglément, blindly, conformément, commodément, commodiously, énormément, incommodément, incommodiously, opiniâtrément, conformably, enormously, obstinately. To THE SECOND RULE. · Gentil makes gentiment, prettily, and the following eight adverbs take, before ment, the é acute, instead of the e mute in the feminine of the adjectives. And in adjectives ending in -nt, the adverbs are formed by changing -nt into -mment; as, constant, constamment, constantly; éloquent, éloquemment, eloquently. |
