Each lesson contains one page of conversational sentences and vocabulary upon one subject; one page of select pieces of poetry and one page of interesting stories.

Take only a few lines of the lesson at one time, more or less according to the ability of the pupil, not forgetting the motto: Not very much, but very good.

1. Pronunciation.-The beginner should repeat after the teacher each word, each sentence of the lesson, until able to pronounce well and fluently.

2. Translation. The pupil should learn not only the meaning of the whole sentence, but also the exact meaning of each word.

3. Recitation. The pieces of poetry ought to be learned and said as if it were for the school commencement.

4. Conversation.-When the conversational sentences have been mastered, a few questions made up of French words already learned should be asked by the teacher and properly answered by the pupil.

5. Stories. The stories may be used for reading and translation, also for conversational practice by questions and answers in French, using specially words contained in the lesson.

6. Spelling. The pupil may be requested to prepare a few lines for spelling or dictation.

(') Apostrophe, apostrophe :-l'enfant, l'homme. (,) Cédille, cedilla:-garçon, traçons, traçant. (..) Tréma, diceresis :-naïf, haïr, aigu, aiguë. (-) Trait d'union, hyphen:-avez-vous, a-t-il. («<») Guillemets, inverted commas.

PUNCTUATION.

Point (.), virgule (,), point et virgule (;), deux points (), point d'interrogation (?), point d'exclamation (!), points de suspensions (.................)

(1) jis sound like z in azure, or like s in pleasure.

(2) u is sounded like the German û. There is no such sound in English.

(3) h is not pronounced: Un homme, un héros.

(4) w is pronounced like w in Engligh words and like v in German words: Washington, les whigs; Wagner, le Wurthenberg.
