When two years ago I undertook the composition of A Short History of the English Language and Literature, I thought only of my pupils at the Faculty of Poitiers. My aim was to provide them with a summary of my lectures which could easily be understood, and to induce them, by making them familiar with the English language, to read the authors in the original.
