MY DEAR BOY,

WHEN I look back for a moment

on the chequered life I led at the University, mixing, judiciously (as I then thought), the utile with the dulce, and rewarding every hour's toil with three or four of recreation, I confess I have a considerable inclination to atone by present watchfulness for past neglect.
