assumption s. Die Auffassung. Synonymer Ausdruck ist conception. Ungenügend bei L. Ill. Sport. & Dram. N. Sept. 23, 1876: Mr. Phelps sustained his celebrated assumption of Henry V with all the impressiveness and tender pathos as of yore = die Auffassung eines dramatischen Charakters. Gleich darauf: Mr. Ryder, who doubled the parts of the Chief Justice, and the rough soldier Williams showed in both assumptions what a true artist he is. Auch in Berichten von anderer Hand kehrt der Ausdruck wieder.

Field, Nov. 4, 1876: The foothold is perfect, the going admirable; and though the fences are black as night, when a horse feels that in going at his fence, he will not slip, he goes with double the vigour and boldness; for it is a fact well known to all sportsmen that when old horses refuse, it is owing either to the take-off being slippery or the landing hard.

demoralise v. tr. Gänzlich entmuthigen. L. hat: „entsittlichen“. Ill.

Sport. & Dram. N. Sept. 23, 1876: Mr. Hayman, brother of the exhead - master of Rugby, and one of the literary staff of the Saturday Review, frostbitten, broken, bruised, and demoralised as he was, recovered life and hope through the manly devotion of his plucky country men.

gradient s. Die Steigung. Hoppe hat L. vollständig berichtigt, wie folgendes Beispiel lehrt. Field Sept. 16, 1876: As the hill was a gradient varying from 10 or 12 to 1, this is not to be wondered at under such conditions.

assets s. L. zu eng. Es bezeichnet nicht blos den Vermögensbestand eines Falliten, sondern überhaupt Activa, entgegengesetzt den Passiva. Field Sept. 16, 1876: Mr. Neison, the well-known actuary, who has been employed to value the assets and audit the accounts of numerous clubs of all sizes . . . They found the assets of these six clubs to be L. 6295 und noch öfter.

frostbite s. Der Frost der Zustand, in welchem ein Mensch sich befindet, der von der Kälte gelitten hat. Nicht bei L., wohl aber bei Hoppe. Ill. Sport. & Dram. N. Sept. 23, 1876: A Suiss guide, almost powerless from frostbite, tended and comforted an English gentleman, who is frostbitten in the hands, frostbitten in the feet etc. vor Frost. Liverp. Journ. Nov. 4, 1876: Then a sudden fall of temperature a day or two, coming upon wet and damp, caused a few frostbites of the toes, one or two of which had to be amputated during the winter bewirkten, dass einige Zehen erfroren.
